I’ve been extremely influenced by a few things lately: capturing sweet, real moments, creating romantic and airy images and the movement and etherealness of long dresses.
Keeping those three things in mind, Michiko and Kyle’s engagement session was my dream. They chose a location that holds a lot of history and meaning to them: the house and yard that Michiko grew up in. They decided that they would like to do a partial in-home session complete with some tree trimming. And to top it all off Michiko let me know just a few days shy of the session that she would be wearing a gown for some of the session (cue happy dance). Obviously, I was in my happy place. Kyle is a dance instructor so, of course, I made sure to get them to dance lots. That’s only natural, right? Right. These two are so sweet, you can feel the love and trust they have grown together. I can’t wait for their wedding day and getting to watch that love be celebrated by everyone! I get really excited when couples ask for their engagement session at a location or done in a way, that truly reflects their personality. Caitlin and Hugo were one of those couples. They knew from the get-go that they wanted to include their dogs (an obvious yes from me) and chose the location of one of their favourite hiking spots that just happened to have a hidden beach (ummmm, yes please!!!).
Caitlin and Hugo captivated me from the first moment we sat down at supper to discuss their wedding. Their plans for their lives, their interest in homesteading and appreciation for buying local and living consciously reflects that of Matt’s and mine so well. The rest came so naturally. We spent their session chatting while searching for spots that would shelter us from the gushing wind. Their dogs, Beefy and Denver, ran happily through the trails (obviously happy about the choice in location) and even let us capture a few with them well behaved. The dogs gave the best scene stealers in this session - they had us all laughing as they continuous pounced in and out of the photos. I cannot wait for Caitlin and Hugo’s wedding this summer! I am so thrilled I was able to capture these images for dear, dear friends of mine. They welcomed the third little to their tribe just days after Liam's first birthday. Spiked the baby-fever in me, to say the least.
We only had a few moments to capture little Edward (roughly the length of Liam's nap). Once this little dude was topped off with milk he was more than happy to co-operate (with a little top-up halfway through - see his sweet cry and you'll know when that was). Click the "Read More" button to see more of little Edward's session Winter is my absolute favourite. Snow topped evergreens, white-blanketed fields, ice-covered branches - that’s my jam. So when this beautiful twin Mama was up for my suggestion of an outdoor winter session to celebrate her two little ones I was thrilled. We picked a dress to compliment the cool tones, and to make her stand out. Little did we know the sun bursting through the trees would be her perfect accessory.
I am absolutely in love with this session (and still very much in awe of how Kelsey makes carrying two babies look so flawless). Click the "read more" button to see more of Kelsey's maternity session - the sun peeking through the trees is definitely worth it! After crossing all of our fingers and toes that we would have some beautiful snow for Lori and Jonah’s engagement session, the weather really came through! We were greeted with a gorgeous blanket of fresh snow that covered the trees and ground!
The snow also had one more added bonus: The chill gave them the perfect excuse to cuddle close the entire time. After a few snowball fights and tumbles into the snow I think we can chalk this up to a successful engagement session! Now, let's see what shenanigans we can get into at the wedding… Click "Read More" to see that tumble! I met this sweet family at Anna & Jeremy’s wedding (see post here) and immediately kicked it off with Celine and fell in love with sweet Arlynn. I get so drawn to kids especially when my own little dude isn’t around, and this little gal was all smiles for me at the wedding. Talk about a heart breaker. Watching Shane and Celine at the wedding was so beautiful. Seeing how in love they are, and how enthralled they are in their little girl was amazing.
So flash forward a few months, when they reached out wanting some family photos I was THRILLED. We set to work trying to find a time that worked for all of us to be in the same city. When visiting my parents one weekend we were able to make it work. Now, it might have been the coldest day we could have managed but we did it! We took shelter from the wind at the most precious local tree farm, Ferguson's Christmas Trees. A farm that I grew up going to with my own family to buy Christmas trees. The farm greeted us with its magic by showing us how beautifully the sunlight floods through the trees. If you want to experience this magic yourself, be sure to visit the Ferguson’s Christmas Trees farm! You’ll be greeting by sweet people, and find stunning trees. While these images only showcase Kelsie and Ryan, it's important to note that they also brought their adorable kids along for the session. We photographed a few as a family, and then sent them off with their grandparents while we focused on the love between these two. Engagement sessions are meant to showcase you and your family, not just your partner. Bring your babies, kids, fur-babies! Let the session reflect you.
Now, back to our regularly scheduled program : Kelsie and Ryan! The love between these two is so sweet you can feel as it fills up the air around you. Cole Harbour Heritage Park gave us the most wonderful backdrop for our session. The leaves were a little past due and majorly blanketing the group rather than the trees - yet, it couldn't have been a more perfect fall setting. Click the "Read More" button to see more of how wonderfully the yellow leaves and browning field grass treated us. After my super cheesy rambling on Bette and Aaron’s engagement blog post (find it here) I just don’t know how I am going to add more about the love that Aaron and Bette share! I mean, there’s definitely not enough words to describe it and DEFINITELY not enough brainpower in me to piece those words together to do it justice.
So, hopefully these images do a good job doing so because the day deserves to be raved about! It was filled with people ready to celebrate it all. Bette did an amazing job piecing her ideas into reality with the decor. Rose gold accentuated with natural pieces and lots of greenery. The whole thing really reflected her love for simple, beautiful romance. Aaron wasn’t able to keep his eyes off of Bette from the moment he first saw her on the aisle. He met her halfway down and they finished the walk together, symbolizing how the rest of their lives they would be a team. It was incredibly beautiful (and totally put tears in my eyes). The whole day was magical, and held at a venue that was equally so. …Not to mention the signature drinks were unbelievable. Big fan (ps. B+A can I get that recipe 😉). I can’t tell you how excited I am to now witness it free-standing. The sweetness and understanding shared between these two is incredible. So much support and encouragement.
They not only push each other, but shelter each other when it is needed. This is a balance that is beautiful to watch play out. Photographing their engagement was honestly one of the easiest things. They are so wrapped up in each other that I basically had to ask them not to kiss or cuddle for a few pictures 😂 A photographer’s dream! We actually planned these photos for the night before the wedding. Dressed up from their rehearsal dinner and flying on the high of what was to come tomorrow was the sweetest way to celebrate their engagement. Giving them a chance to forget the busy-ness and focus on each other gave these images the tenderness they possess. Click "read more" to witness it all. Looking out the window that morning you couldn’t have wish for a better day for a wedding. It was warm, beautiful and had a slight breeze (although I’m sure the groomsmen could’ve wished for it to be a bit stronger). Anna looked like a dream in her wedding gown, and Jeremy was putting groom models to shame. The pair made the perfect couple and that was obvious to all.
Families and friends gathered together to celebrate their sweet love. The happiness and thrill was written on everyone’s face and the pride on parents’ and grandparents’. Their wedding party was possibly the craziest group I’ve met! I have no doubt that bus contains some of the funniest memories that I will ever have from a wedding. On the flip side of crazy, Anna and Jeremy’s wedding was also touchingly sweet. They honoured grandparents by having a bouquet to pass to Anna’s grandmother and grandfather to honour their years of marriage. They worked up to the awarding of the bouquet by inviting married guests to come up for a dance. As the dance progressed they asked “anyone married longer than a year please exit the dance floor” and so on until only one couple was left. Anna’s grandparents, at an amazing 64 years! They also had a second bouquet for Anna's other grandmother, who they share their wedding date with. That very day her grandmother would be celebrating her 65th wedding anniversary with her late husband. It was such a sentimental moment as Anna gifted each of her grandmothers their bouquets.
